Indian students can also apply at IIT’s African campus

Indian students can also apply and appear for the three-level process for admission into the first offshore campus to be started by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras on the African island of Zanzibar in Tanzania. The fees will be $12,000 per year for bachelors and $4,000 for post-graduate. Classes will begin in October.

IIT Madras’ Zanzibar campus to commence classes from October

The international campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), spread across 200 acres on Zanzibar Island in Tanzania, will start classes in October 2023. Preeti Aghalayam, Dean of the School of Science & Engineering, IIT Madras, will be the first women director of an IIT as she is the Director-in-charge of international campus of the IIT Madras at Zanzibar-Tanzania.

IIT Campus In Tanzania's Zanzibar To Offer Data Science And AI Courses, Classes To Start From October

The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) overseas campus is set to become operational in October in Tanzania's Zanzibar with the initial intake of 70 students in two programs. The campus, known as IITM Zanzibar, is a collaboration between IIT-M and Tanzania. Initially, the faculty will be deputed from IIT-M to Tanzania and subsequently local faculty members would also be recruited, said IIT-M in a press release on Monday.

In another milestone for IITs, Dr Preeti Aghalayam will become the first woman director-in-charge for IIT Madras in Zanzibar and the first ever woman to be an IIT director. IITM Director Professor V Kamakoti told the media that her appointment to the high-profile role was in line with IITM's aim to bring women into leadership roles and work for gender balance.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Monday became the first ever IIT to launch an international campus, which will be set-up in Zanzibar Island, Tanzania. “It is indeed a major milestone in this history of IIT Madras that we are establishing a Campus at Zanzibar. Through this, we look forward to active participation in the future higher education initiatives at Zanzibar,” the institute's director Prof. V. Kamakoti said in a press conference.
